Ever wondered just how many couples are getting married in Australia?
The Australian Bureau of Statistics recently released their latest report on civil ceremonies and trends from 2015. Did you know in 2015 there were over 113,000 marriages registered in Australia?
Over a period of 20 years, Australians have increasingly opted for civil rather than religious celebrants, with civil ceremonies almost doubling, while the number of religious ceremonies have almost halved. The proportion of marriage ceremonies performed by civil celebrants has continued to increase in 2015, with civil marriage celebrants performing a staggering 75% of all registered marriage ceremonies, an increase from 74% in 2014. I like to think I had a small part to play in this trend!
Interestingly couples who lived together prior to marriage accounted for 81% of all marriages registered in 2015, an increase from the 79% recorded the year prior.
The median age of males and females tying the knot was 32 and 30 years respectively in 2015. The median age at marriage for males has increased by 0.3 years since 2014 and the median age at marriage for females has increased by 0.2 years since over the same period.
Marriages where both partners were marrying for the first time accounted for 72% of all marriage in 2015.
Ever wondered why you need to book an awesome marriage celebrant early for a Spring wedding? Of the 113,595 marriages registered in 2015, the most popular month of celebration for marriages was October with 13,614 marriages. That’s 27,228 I do’s! July is at the other end with 5,563 marriages – come to think of it any month is a great time to be married.
