Many couples ask me about changing their name once they are married.
Changing your name is quite a simple process. In NSW, a partner can begin using their spouses’ surname once they are legally married. If you intend to change your surname to your partner’s surname on an official document such as a passport or driver’s licence, most agencies will require evidence that your marriage is valid and legally registered in NSW. That’s why it is so important to use a trusted, experienced, and most importantly qualified marriage celebrant.
Tip – ask your celebrant if they can order your Certificate of Marriage online from Births Deaths and Marriages. This will save you from having to go through the ordering process at a later date.
The only kicker is if you intend to formally hyphenate your surname with your spouse the NSW Government requires you to change your name in the same method that applies to individuals not married. The good news is, if you are eligible, the change of name process can be completed easily online via the NSW Government website.
